What is circuit training?

Circuit training is a training method that is comprised of a series of exercises that are performed repeatedly and through a rotation.  The circuit training exercises are generally for training different muscle groups through this rotation and allows for an athlete to get a total body workout in a two for one kind of fashion.  When an athlete moves from exercise to exercise they are able to train their muscles while keeping their heart rate up which increases their strength, cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory endurance.

Circuit training is great because it can basically be done anywhere.  The advantage of using a workout like circuit training is that an athlete can do it while on vacation or when training facilities are not available.  An athlete can do the exercises with their own body weight or they can increase the intensity with the use of weighted objects or fitness machines.  An example would be to perform a set of Lat. Pull downs followed by 1-3 minutes on a treadmill or track, followed by a set of seated rows.  As you can see, circuit training allows an athlete to increase their cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular strength endurance during the same workout.
